On April 21st, Atlanta Falcons players, Jerious Norwood, Brian Williams, Keith Zinger, and Antone Smith, along with Falcons cheerleader, Nicole visited our chapter to teach golf to children whose golf skills range from beginner to highly skilled. Using a game called golf baseball, beginner children were taught grip and swing techniques that allowed them to quickly become competitive in the high spirited golf baseball game. Four teams, each headed by a Falcons player or cheerleader competed on two baseball diamonds set up on the wide open practice facility of John A. White Golf Course.
From the crack of the golf clubs to the calls of “you’re out!” and “you’re safe!”, it was evident that the children and the players were having a great time! The game became very competitive, but Falcons Community Relations and Youth Programs Manager Chris Millman was an effective umpire.
Over on the putting green, Brian Williams was fighting for his life in a game of golf tic-tac-toe as he tried to chip and putt three balls in row on a grid laid out on the green. Several skilled children were giving it their all to ensure that he did not win. At the conclusion of the game, there was a considerable amount of discussion about who won, so the game was called a tie.
Healthy refreshments were provided by the Southeast United Diary Industry Association. SUDIA representatives, Betsy Dietsch and Rashida Shoemaker were prepared with cold chocolate milk for thirsty children who rushed their tents during their quick breaks.
Thanks to the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation for arranging the visit.
The Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation has designated several geographical areas as Falcons Fitness Zones with the goal to inspire children to engage in physical activity and eat healthy foods. The First Tee of Atlanta is located in the Southwest Atlanta Cascade Road Falcons Fitness Zone.
