THREE FIRST TEE OF ATLANTA TEENS NAMED FIRST TEE SCHOLARS - CLASS OF 2010

Atlanta teens chosen among hundreds of students nationwide to compete for scholarships awarded by The First Tee National

ATLANTA, GA (January 25, 2010) – It was announced today by The First Tee of Atlanta Executive Director, Vanessa Hawkins, that Evan Glanville, Randon Holt and Maya McLin, all members of The First Tee of Atlanta, have earned the designation of The First Tee Scholar - Class of 2010. These students now have the opportunity to apply for one of more than 20 Leadership Scholarships offered through The First Tee to attend an affiliate college or university.

“We are so proud to have three students from the Atlanta chapter selected for The First Tee Scholars Program this year,” said Hawkins. “Evan, Randon and Maya have excelled both academically and in the character development skills that we try to instill in all of our participants. They are wonderful examples of how The First Tee program is helping Atlanta’s youth reach their goals in college and beyond.”

Glanville, 17, is a senior at North Atlanta High School in Atlanta, Ga. He was selected to be a First Tee Scholar based on his leadership skills, community involvement and academic achievements. The First Tee of Atlanta chapter was established in 2000, and Glanville was one of the original members. While pursuing Eagle level certification with The First Tee program, he was also pursuing Eagle Scout honors with the Boy Scouts of America. He serves as a counselor at Camp Best Friends and coaches younger participants in his Chapter. Gen. Colin Powell’s America’s Promise Alliance selected Glanville to attend the 2009 Youth Summit in D.C. as a representative for The First Tee of Atlanta. Following the summit, the students commit to establishing a program that will positively impact other American youth in their own community. Glanville and his team are developing a financial awareness program to incorporate into The First Tee curriculum. Glanville has also been selected to participate in the Wal-Mart First Tee Open, held at Pebble Beach, for the past three years.

Holt, 18, is a senior at Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta, Ga. He embodies the leadership skills and characteristics that define The First Tee Scholars. Active at his Chapter for more than six years, he serves as a camp counselor for Camp Best Friends and often coaches younger participants. He’s been one of Zoo Atlanta’s Volunteens since 2006, where he interprets animal exhibits for visitors. In addition, Holt has volunteered at the Piedmont Heart Institute and Spread the Word Church Ministries. Holt was recently recognized as one of Atlanta INtown Paper’s “20 Under 20” for his ability to take initiative to help others in the Atlanta community. Gen. Colin Powell’s America’s Promise staff also selected Holt to attend the 2009 Youth Summit in D.C. on behalf of The First Tee of Atlanta. Through America’s Youth Alliance Impact Academy, he is working alongside Glanville to develop a financial literacy course for teens to be included in The First Tee curriculum. Holt has participated in The First Tee Life Skills and Leadership Academy, the Future Leaders Forum and the Wal-Mart First Tee Open.

McLin, 17, is a senior at South Gwinnett High School in Snellville, Ga. McLin earned her spot in the 2010 Class of The First Tee Scholars because she exemplifies leadership, service and academic excellence within her Chapter. Active at the Atlanta chapter for four years, McLin coaches younger participants, teaching them both life and golf skills. She is also a consistent volunteer assistant during Life Skills testing at The First Tee of Atlanta. In addition to balancing time on the golf course and in the classroom, McLin is a dedicated and dependable student worker. She has held a part-time job throughout all four years she has been involved in The First Tee program. McLin was selected to participate in The First Tee Life Skills and Leadership Academy in 2009, and she was one of 50 students selected to attend the Future Leaders Forum in Orlando, Fla. last year.

The First Tee Scholars Program, which was born in 2001, recognizes participants for exceptional achievement in academics, leadership, character development, and Chapter and community involvement. Since 2003, the program has designated 295 Scholars and has awarded 78 named scholarships. Several schools throughout the United States have partnered with The First Tee to offer merit-based scholarships that help to offset the cost of attending a college or university.
